Aar318's Smart Proofreader: Private Writing Help

Catch spelling, grammar, punctuation, agreement, word-choice, and repetition mistakes without sending your writing to an online proofreading service.

Aar318's Smart Proofreader works in standard text boxes and compatible rich-text editors across the web. The bundled Harper engine performs proofreading locally in your browser, with no account, writing analytics, or remote grammar endpoint.

Getting Started
  1. Type in a supported writing field and pause briefly to see the issue count.
  2. Select the small field badge, the toolbar icon, or Check Current Writing Field from the extension-icon right-click menu.
  3. Review each suggestion and choose the change you want. Nothing is submitted or sent automatically.
  4. Optional automatic correction can be enabled for conservative fixes. It is off by default.

The full Settings page opens automatically after the first installation so the privacy, correction, dialect, site, and support choices are easy to review.

Key Features
  • Local Spelling and Grammar Checking: Proofreads on-device with the bundled Harper WebAssembly engine.
  • Useful Writing Checks: Finds many spelling, typo, grammar, punctuation, agreement, word-choice, capitalization, and repeated-word issues.
  • Review Before Changing: Apply individual suggestions, use Fix Obvious, ignore an issue once, or add a legitimate word to your personal dictionary.
  • Two Clear Automatic Modes: Automatic correction is off by default. Obvious fixes only is recommended and changes the safest clear mistakes while skipping uncertainty. Expanded spelling and grammar catches more close spelling, agreement, punctuation, and word-choice issues, but can occasionally make the wrong guess.
  • Transposition-Aware Obvious Fixes: Safely recognizes adjacent-letter swaps when Harper ranks the swapped spelling first, such as tseting to testing, even when alternative manual suggestions are available.
  • Expanded Close-Spelling Fixes: Expanded mode can use a close top-ranked spelling suggestion such as autmatically to automatically.
  • Smarter General Spelling: Ordinary typos are handled by a bundled 40,000-word frequency dictionary plus roughly 240,000 nearby-word patterns instead of an ever-growing list of word-specific patches. Expanded mode can use context to favor good in pretty gud and testing in my own tesng, while keeping all processing offline.
  • Respectful Backspace: Editing a corrected word with Backspace is treated as rejecting that automatic change, so a nearby incomplete spelling is not repeatedly restored. Deleting and typing the word again enables a fresh check.
  • User Edits Win: Ctrl+A and Backspace can clear the entire message after a correction. Pending rich-editor work checks the draft between replacements and stops immediately if the user has changed it.
  • Safe Undo: Reverts the last automatic correction only while the field still matches the corrected text.
  • Multiple Ways to Check: Use the toolbar, Alt+Shift+P, selection context menu, editable-field context menu, or extension-icon right-click menu.
  • Guided Page Picking: Choose Pick field or text to outline the exact hovered writing field, paragraph, or readable page element. Picked fields support corrections, while ordinary page text opens as a clearly labeled review-only result. Highlight text remains available for reviewing a smaller dragged selection.
  • Read Aloud: Hear the current draft using browser and system voices to catch mistakes that are easy to overlook visually.
  • English Dialects: Choose American, British, Australian, or Canadian English.
  • Site Controls: Pause on selected sites, use an allowlist instead, or hide only the floating field badge.
  • Best-Effort Username Protection: Skips explicit @handles, leading chat-name labels, and recognized rich-editor mention elements so usernames are less likely to be treated as spelling mistakes.
  • Movable, Temporary Results: The suggestion panel tries to open above the affected word, can be dragged away from page controls, and closes shortly after a successful user-selected fix while keeping undo available.
  • Compatible Rich Editors: Corrections use the editor's normal editing path and are verified after the website updates its state, preventing a visual-only change from being reported as successful.
  • Accessible Support Links: Icon-labeled Ko-fi and donation links appear at the top and bottom of Settings, inside the suggestion panel, and directly in the extension-icon right-click menu.
  • Faster Toolbar Controls: Compact Ko-fi and Donate buttons appear at the top of the toolbar popup. Automatic correction is a direct toggle, and Obvious or Expanded mode can be selected there without opening Settings or a confirmation dialog.
  • Synchronized Quick Controls: The extension-icon menu keeps its automatic-correction and live-suggestion checkmarks synchronized with Settings.
  • Clean Badge Lifecycle: Field and toolbar counts clear when focus leaves the checked field or a read-only selection review ends, preventing stale issue badges.
  • Local Preferences: Personal dictionary, settings, and site rules remain in browser extension storage. Settings can be exported and imported.
  • Chrome and Firefox: Both browser releases are generated from the same source and feature set.

Safety and Privacy
  • Writing is processed locally and is not uploaded for proofreading.
  • No account, analytics, advertising tracker, or remote proofreading API is included.
  • Recognized password, passcode, payment-card, security-code, one-time-code, social-security, and common code-editor fields are excluded.
  • Automatic correction does not press Send, submit forms, or replace a draft that changed while it was being checked.
  • Browsers prevent extensions from running on protected internal pages, extension stores, and some built-in viewers.

Permissions
  • Storage: Saves proofreading preferences, personal dictionary words, and site rules locally.
  • Context Menus: Adds user-invoked checking, toggle, site, settings, undo, and support commands.
  • Host Access: Lets the extension provide its writing-field tools on webpages. Page text is not collected or transmitted.
  • Active Tab: Lets toolbar and context-menu commands act on the page the user explicitly invokes them from.
