Privacy Policy — Adhan Caster
Live prayer-time countdown with automatic cross-tab media pausing.
Last updated: June 10, 2026
Adhan Caster is built to be privacy-friendly. It does not use analytics or trackers, does not require an account, and does not sell or share your data. Your settings stay on your own device. The only information sent off your device is the location you choose (a city name) and the text you type into the location search — used solely to look up prayer times and resolve places.
Who this applies to
This policy covers the Adhan Caster browser extension ("the extension"), listed in stores as "Adhan Caster: Muslim Prayer Times & Auto-Pause". It is a standalone extension published on the Chrome Web Store; the same policy applies to builds of the extension for other browsers (such as Firefox), if and when they are published.
Information the extension uses
The extension works with a small amount of data, all of it tied to its core features:
Data Why it's used Where it lives
Your chosen location (city, region/state, country, and the coordinates of the place you pick) To fetch the correct daily prayer times and display them. Stored locally on your device; the city/region/country are sent to the prayer-times API (see below).
Location search text you type To find and resolve real places while you set your location. Sent to the Open-Meteo geocoding API as you type (see below); not otherwise stored.
Your preferences (enable toggle, heads-up lead time, auto-resume delay, focus-mode toggle) To make the extension behave the way you configured it. Stored locally on your device only.
The fetched prayer schedule and current pause state To show the countdown and pause/resume media at prayer time. Stored locally on your device only.
On-device usage counts (e.g. how many times media was auto-paused, prayer alerts shown, and active days) To show you a simple summary of your own activity inside the popup. Stored locally on your device only; never transmitted, and not used for analytics.
Local data is held in your browser's extension storage (chrome.storage.local) and never leaves your device except as described in "Third-party services" below.
Third-party services
To do its job, the extension makes requests to two external services:
Prayer-times API (api.aladhan.com, the public AlAdhan API) — receives the city, region/state, and country you selected (plus your chosen calculation method and Asr school) in order to return that location's prayer times. No personal identifiers are sent.
Open-Meteo geocoding API (geocoding-api.open-meteo.com, see the Open-Meteo terms & privacy) — receives the text you type in the location search to return matching places and their coordinates.
As with any web request, these services automatically receive standard technical metadata (such as your IP address and request time). The extension itself does not attach any identifier to these requests. Data handling by these third parties is governed by their own policies.
What the extension does NOT do
It does not collect names, emails, passwords, or any personally identifying information.
It does not track your browsing history, and it does not read, store, or transmit the content of the pages you visit.
It does not use cookies, analytics, advertising, or fingerprinting.
It does not sell, rent, or share your data with anyone for marketing.
The extension's content script interacts with a page only to find <video> and <audio> elements so it can pause and resume them at prayer time. It does not inspect or send page content anywhere.
Permissions and why they're needed
Permission Purpose
storage Save your settings and the prayer schedule locally.
alarms Trigger the countdown and pause exactly at prayer time.
notifications Show the desktop notification when it's time to pray.
scripting Insert the pause/countdown logic into pages that are already open when you install or update.
tabs Send the pause/resume signal to your open tabs.
Access to websites (http:///, https:///) Required so media can be paused in any tab at prayer time — the extension's core feature.
Data retention and deletion
All settings and schedule data live on your device. You can clear your saved location and preferences at any time from the extension's settings, or remove everything by uninstalling the extension (Chrome: chrome://extensions; Firefox: about:addons). The developer holds no server-side copy of your data.
Children's privacy
The extension is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this URL with a new "Last updated" date.
