Version 1.8
Released Jul 25, 2026 - 62.06 MBWorks with firefox 109.0a1 and laterAdded
• Lantern asks how you'll use it the first time you open it

• Sixteen new backgrounds
• A red "how much you've watched" bar on video tiles, like YouTube's
• A one-click "Quick save" badge that files a video into a playlist you pick
• You can switch off the labels on the buttons you already know
Changed
• The spreadsheet button now says "Spreadsheet Mode" on it
• The blue ⓘ button is softer, and glows — the one-time badge on the left edge that explains clicking the background to move around
• The Import theme button says "Import theme" — it was a small round icon under your themes whose only clue was the label that appeared if you hovered it long enough
• The spreadsheet button is called "Spreadsheet view" everywhere
• The Copy link tile button now starts next to the Alchemy flask
• "Add Image" and "Add Color" now sit in the same place, and say the same thing
• Content Backdrop now shows you what each choice does
• The Background section is tidier, and no longer scrolls inside itself
• "Use on Every Theme" now starts switched on — one background shared by every theme is what most people expect, so that's what Lantern does out of the box
• The plain background colors are now four: Gray, Dark Gray, Black and White
• Sharing a theme now carries a built-in background with it
• Your background now belongs to your theme, and lives with it
• GIF Speed now says what it does, and picks from set speeds
• Theme previews always show your real background now
• "YouTube Workspace" is now called "YouTube Tabs"
• Hover labels are now Lantern's own, instead of the browser's
• Your settings backup now saves as an ordinary .zip too
• A shared theme now saves as an ordinary .zip, with a note inside explaining it
Fixed
• The Subscriptions button now offers to add a profile when you haven't set one up yet
• The empty strip above your tiles is gone
• Confirmation boxes opened from Settings are no longer see-through
• Importing a batch from your Lantern playlist now lands in the order you arranged, straight away
• Lantern no longer reorders your YouTube playlist based on a guess
• The "Surface Image" control no longer shows up on the plain Theme list
Removed
• The welcome screen on first open is gone — opening Lantern for the first time used to put a box in front of you asking for a theme and a background before you could see anything
• Five background colors have been retired — Deep Sea, Pine, Aubergine, Umber and Fog are no longer in the listSource code released under All Rights Reserved
Version 1.7
Released Jul 24, 2026 - 62 MBWorks with firefox 109.0a1 and laterAdded
• Spreadsheet view: turn any tab page into a table of your videos and copy the rows into Google Sheets or Excel. Each video keeps a Notes column that follows it around.
• Surface Image: one picture behind your whole homepage, with per-section overrides for the header, tiles, toolbar, Alchemy Lab and menu.
• Choose which buttons sit on a tile's edge and drag them into place.
• Choose what appears on the toolbar, or hide it entirely.
• Drag or paste a picture into any image picker; "Choose Image" now opens an upload panel.
• Finder-style Global tabs: folders, right-click menus, a "Find a tab" box (press /), and a Window sort.
• Multi-select any tab with Ctrl or Shift click, then add the selection to a folder, move it to a new window, or close it.
• Saved sessions and automatic snapshots in the recently closed panel.
• Sync your Workspace to a private YouTube playlist across devices.
• A theme shared as a file can carry its pictures, plus your font and background if you choose.
Changed
• Lantern runs much lighter in the background and writes to disk far less.
• Reading your subscriptions on YouTube now clears the new-videos count.
• Recently closed tabs are captured even when Lantern isn't open, and it keeps more of them.
• Settings reorganised, with new Tiles, Shortcuts and Memory sections.
Fixed
• Your tile layout and groups now survive restarts, tab cooling and cross-device sync.
• Dragging tiles to reorder or group them is reliable.
• Parked videos keep the Workspace border and close properly.
• Many playlist Sync fixes, including no longer offering back videos you already have or just closed.Source code released under All Rights Reserved
